Existen algunas líneas muy conocidas en el discurso común: hay quienes piensan que es la investigación, la innovación que se ha puesto de moda, para otros es la docencia, un pequeño grupo afirma la importancia de la vinculación con la colectividad o con la sociedad. Nosotros, a partir de nuestra experiencia, podemos decir que pueden ser todas, relacionadas y diferenciadas; sin embargo, tal pregunta nos lleva a otras preguntas y cuestionamientos a fin de acercarnos a la cuestión de qué universidad es necesaria para el siglo XXI, la cual se dirige hacia la hipótesis de la transformación.
